डॉ॰ सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन - 5 सितम्बर 1888 – 17 अप्रैल 1975) भारत के प्रथम उप-राष्ट्रपति (1952 - 1962) और द्वितीय राष्ट्रपति रहे। वे भारतीय संस्कृति के संवाहक, प्रख्यात शिक्षाविद, महान दार्शनिक और एक आस्थावान हिन्दू विचारक थे। उनके इन्हीं गुणों के कारण सन् १९५४ में भारत सरकार ने उन्हें सर्वोच्च सम्मान भारत रत्न से अलंकृत किया था। उनका जन्मदिन (५ सितम्बर) भारत में शिक्षक दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाता है

सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन का जन्म दक्षिण भारत के तिरुत्तनि स्थान में हुआ था जो चेन्नई से 64 किमी उत्तर-पूर्व में है।

वे भारतीय संस्कृति से ओ

तप्रोत एक प्रख्यात शिक्षाविद, महान दार्शनिक, उत्कृष्ट वक्ता और एक आस्थावान हिन्दू विचारक थे। वे स्वतन्त्र भारत के दूसरे राष्ट्रपति थे। इससे पूर्व वे उपराष्ट्रपति भी रहे। राजनीति में आने से पूर्व उन्होंने अपने जीवन के महत्वपूर्ण 40 वर्ष शिक्षक के रूप में व्यतीत किये थे। उनमें एक आदर्श शिक्षक के सारे गुण मौजूद थे। उन्होंने अपना जन्म दिन अपने व्यक्तिगत नाम से नहीं अपितु सम्पूर्ण शिक्षक बिरादरी को सम्मानित किये जाने के उद्देश्य से शिक्षक दिवस के रूप में मनाने की इच्छा व्यक्त की थी जिसके परिणामस्वरूप आज भी सारे देश में उनका जन्म दिन (5 सितम्बर) को प्रति वर्ष शिक्षक दिवस के नाम से ही मनाया जाता है।

डॉ॰ राधाकृष्णन समस्त विश्व को एक शिक्षालय मानते थे। उनकी मान्यता थी कि शिक्षा के द्वारा ही मानव मस्तिष्क का सदुपयोग किया जाना सम्भव है। इसीलिए समस्त विश्व को एक इकाई समझकर ही शिक्षा का प्रबन्धन किया जाना चाहिये। एक बार ब्रिटेन के एडिनबरा विश्वविद्यालय में भाषण देते हुए उन्होंने कहा था कि मानव की जाति एक होनी चाहिये। मानव इतिहास का सम्पूर्ण लक्ष्य मानव जाति की मुक्ति है। यह तभी सम्भव है जब समस्त देशों की नीतियों का आधार विश्व-शान्ति की स्थापना का प्रयत्न करना हो। वे अपनी बुद्धिमतापूर्ण व्याख्याओं, आनन्ददायी अभिव्यक्तियों और हँसाने व गुदगुदाने वाली कहानियों से अपने छात्रों को मन्त्रमुग्ध कर दिया करते थे। वे छात्रों को प्रेरित करते थे कि वे उच्च नैतिक मूल्यों को अपने आचरण में उतारें। वे जिस विषय को पढ़ाते थे, पढ़ाने के पहले स्वयं उसका अच्छा अध्ययन करते थे। दर्शन जैसे गम्भीर विषय को भी वे अपनी शैली की नवीनता से सरल और रोचक बना देते थे।

पूर्व राष्ट्रपति डॉ॰ सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन की जयन्ती प्रतिवर्ष 5 सितम्बर को 'शिक्षक दिवस' के रूप में मनायी जाती है। इन दिनों जब शिक्षा की गुणात्मकता का ह्रास होता जा रहा है और गुरु-शिष्य सम्बन्धों की पवित्रता को ग्रहण लगता जा रहा है, उनका पुण्य स्मरण फिर एक नयी चेतना पैदा कर सकता है। सन्‌ 1962 में जब वे राष्ट्रपति बने थे, तब कुछ शिष्य और प्रशंसक उनके पास गये और उन्होँने उनसे निवेदन किया कि वे उनके जन्म दिन को शिक्षक दिवस के रूप में मनाना चाहते हैं। उन्होंने कहा- "मेरे जन्मदिन को शिक्षक दिवस के रूप में मनाने से निश्चय ही मैं अपने को गौरवान्वित अनुभव करूँगा।" तबसे आज तक 5 सितम्बर सारे देश में उनका जन्म दिन शिक्षक दिवस के रूप में मनाया जा रहा है।

शिक्षा के क्षेत्र में डॉ॰ राधाकृष्णन ने जो अमूल्य योगदान दिया वह निश्चय ही अविस्मरणीय रहेगा। वे बहुमुखी प्रतिभा के धनी थे। यद्यपि वे एक जाने-माने विद्वान, शिक्षक, वक्ता, प्रशासक, राजनयिक, देशभक्त और शिक्षा शास्त्री थे, तथापि अपने जीवन के उत्तरार्द्ध में अनेक उच्च पदों पर काम करते हुए भी वे शिक्षा के क्षेत्र में सतत योगदान करते रहे। उनकी मान्यता थी कि यदि सही तरीके से शिक्षा दी जाये तो समाज की अनेक बुराइयों को मिटाया जा सकता है।

डॉ॰ राधाकृष्णन कहा करते थे कि मात्र जानकारियाँ देना शिक्षा नहीं है। यद्यपि जानकारी का अपना महत्व है और आधुनिक युग में तकनीक की जानकारी महत्वपूर्ण भी है तथापि व्यक्ति के बौद्धिक झुकाव और उसकी लोकतान्त्रिक भावना का भी बड़ा महत्व है। ये बातें व्यक्ति को एक उत्तरदायी नागरिक बनाती हैं। शिक्षा का लक्ष्य है ज्ञान के प्रति समर्पण की भावना और निरन्तर सीखते रहने की प्रवृत्ति। यह एक ऐसी प्रक्रिया है जो व्यक्ति को ज्ञान और कौशल दोनों प्रदान करती है तथा इनका जीवन में उपयोग करने का मार्ग प्रशस्त करती है। करुणा, प्रेम और श्रेष्ठ परम्पराओं का विकास भी शिक्षा के उद्देश्य हैं।

वे कहते थे कि जब तक शिक्षक शिक्षा के प्रति समर्पित और प्रतिबद्ध नहीं होता और शिक्षा को एक मिशन नहीं मानता तब तक अच्छी शिक्षा की कल्पना नहीं की जा सकती। उन्होंने अनेक वर्षोँ तक अध्यापन किया। एक आदर्श शिक्षक के सभी गुण उनमें विद्यमान थे। उनका कहना था कि शिक्षक उन्हीं लोगों को बनाया जाना चाहिये जो सबसे अधिक बुद्धिमान हों। शिक्षक को मात्र अच्छी तरह अध्यापन करके ही सन्तुष्ट नहीं हो जाना चाहिये अपितु उसे अपने छात्रों का स्नेह और आदर भी अर्जित करना चाहिये। सम्मान शिक्षक होने भर से नहीं मिलता, उसे अर्जित करना पड़ता है।

उनकी मृत्यु 17 अप्रैल 1975 को हुई थी।

आदरणीय प्रधानाध्यापक, सर, मैडम और मेरे प्यारे सहपाठियों को सुबह की नमस्ते। जैसा कि हम सभी जानते हैं कि, आज हम यहाँ शिक्षक दिवस मनाने के लिए एकत्र हुए हैं। मैं .........कक्षा.... में पढ़ने वाला/वाली विद्यार्थी, शिक्षक दिवस पर अपने विचार रखना चाहता/चाहती हूँ। लेकिन, सबसे पहले मैं शिक्षक दिवस के महान अवसर पर भाषण देने का मौका देने के लिए अपनी कक्षा अध्यापिका को धन्यवाद कहना चाहता/चाहती हूँ। मेरे भाषण का विषय है, “हमारे जीवन में शिक्षक की इतनी महत्ता क्यों है”।

भारत में, विद्यार्थियों द्वारा शिक्षक दिवस हर साल 5 सितम्बर को मनाया जाता है। यह डॉ. सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन का जन्म दिवस है। उनका जन्म दिन उनके 1962 में भारत के राष्ट्रपति बनने के बाद के समय से, विद्यार्थियों के अनुग्रह पर शिक्षक दिवस के रुप में मनाया जाता है।

शिक्षक की विद्यार्थियों, समाज और देश की शिक्षा में बहुत सारी महत्वपूर्ण भूमिकाएं हैं। लोग, समाज और देश का विकास एवं वृद्धि शिक्षा की गुणवत्ता पर निर्भर करता है, जो केवल अच्छे शिक्षक के द्वारा दी जाती है। देश में राजनेताओं, डॉक्टरों, इंजीनियरों, व्यापारियों, किसानों, कलाकारों, वैज्ञानिकों, आदि की जरुरत को पूरा करने के लिए अच्छी गुणवत्ता की शिक्षा बहुत आवश्यक है। समाज के लिए आवश्यक ज्ञान के लिए शिक्षक किताबों, लेखों, आदि के माध्यम से प्राप्त करने के लिए निरंतर कठिन परिश्रम करते हैं। वे अपने विद्यार्थियों को हमेशा दिशा-निर्देशित करते हैं और उन्हें अच्छे कैरियर के लिए रास्ता बताते हैं। भारत में ऐसे कई महान अध्यापक है जिन्होंने अपने आपको आने वाले शिक्षकों के लिए प्रेरणास्रोत के रुप में स्थापित किया है।

एक आदर्श शिक्षक को निष्पक्ष और अपमान से प्रभावित हुए बिना हर समय विनम्र रहना चाहिए। विद्यालय में सभी विद्यार्थियों के लिए शिक्षक अभिभावकों की तरह होते हैं। वे छात्रों के स्वास्थ्य और एकाग्रता के स्तर को बनाए रखने के लिए अपने सर्वश्रेष्ठ प्रयास करते हैं। वे अपने विद्यार्थियों के मानसिक स्तर में सुधार करने के लिए पढ़ाई से अलग अतिरिक्त पाठ्क्रम गतिविधियों में भाग लेने के लिए भी प्रोत्साहित करते हैं।

मैं शिक्षा, विद्यार्थियों और शिक्षकों के बारे में भारत के प्रधानमंत्री नरेन्द्र मोदी के द्वारा शिक्षक दिवस पर उनके विद्यार्थियों के साथ हुए वार्तालाप में कही गयी कुछ बातों को कहता/कहती हूँ:

"शिक्षा, राष्ट्र के चरित्र निर्माण के लिए एक ताकत बन जानी चाहिए।"

“बच्चों के साथ वार्तालाप करों: बचपन का आनंद लो। मरते समय तक अपने अंदर के बच्चे को जाने मत दो।”

"हमें अपने समाज में शिक्षकों के प्रति सम्मान को बहाल करना चाहिए।"

“क्या भारत अच्छे शिक्षकों को निर्यात करने का सपना नहीं देख सकता।”

“बच्चे राष्ट्र के निर्माण में स्वच्छता, ऊर्जा और पानी को बचाने के माध्यम से कर सकते हैं।”

शिक्षक दिवस विभिन्न देशों में अलग-अलग तिथियों को एक विशेष कार्यक्रम के रुप में मनाया जाता है। चीन में, यह हर साल 10 सितम्बर को मनाया जाता है। सभी देशों में इस कार्यक्रम को मनाने का उद्देश्य आमतौर पर शिक्षकों को सम्मान देना और शिक्षा के क्षेत्र में प्राप्त उपलब्धियों की प्रशंसा करना है। इस कार्यक्रम के आयोजन के दौरान स्कूलों और कॉलेजों में विद्यार्थियों के द्वारा बहुत सी तैयारियाँ की जाती है। बहुत से विद्यार्थी इस कार्यक्रम को यादगार बनाने के लिए सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रमों, भाषणों और अन्य गतिविधियों में भाग लेकर मनाते हैं। कुछ विद्यार्थी इसे अपने ही तरीके से अपने प्रिय अध्यापक को कोई फूल, कार्ट, गिफ्ट, ई-ग्रीटिंग कार्ड, एस.एम.एस., मैसेज आदि के द्वारा उनका आदर करके और प्रशंसा करने के माध्यम से मनाते हैं।

A very good morning to the Principal, respected teachers and my dear friends. We are here today to celebrate a most honorable occasion of Teachers day. Really it is an honorable occasion to all the students all over the India. It is observed every year to pay respect to the teachers from their obedient students. So, dear friends come on and join this celebration to pay a heartily respect to our own teachers. They are called as the back bone of our society because they highly contribute in building up our characters, shaping our future and help us to be ideal citizens of the country.

Teacher’s day is celebrated all across the India every year on 5th of September to pay tribute to the teachers for their precious contributions in our study as well as towards the society and country. There is a great reason behind the celebration of teacher’s day on 5th of September. Actually, 5th of September is the birthday Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan. He was a great person and highly devoted towards the education. He was well known as the scholar, diplomat, Vice President of India, President of India and most importantly the Teacher.

After his selection as the Indian President in 1962, he was asked and requested by the students to get permission to celebrate his birthday on 5th of September. However, he replied that, instead of celebrating 5th of September as my personal birthday, it would be better if it is dedicated to the whole teaching profession. And 5th of September should be celebrated as teachers day all over India to pay honor to the teaching profession.

For all students of India, Teachers’ Day is like an occasion and opportunity to pay tribute and gratitude to their teachers for their continuous, selfless and precious efforts in shaping the future. They are the reason to enrich all the quality education system in the country and process it continuously without getting tired. Our teachers never consider us less than their own children and teaches us from their heart. As kids we need inspiration and motivation which we surely get from our teachers. They prepare us to tackle any bad situation of the life through the knowledge and patience. Dear teachers, we are really grateful to all of you and would be forever.

These activities are planned by senior students in the Student Council who coordinate the activities well in advance. For Filipino-Chinese schools, a program is usually organized by students for teachers on 27 September while 28 September, considered as the actual Teachers' Day, is a school holiday where both teachers and students are allowed to rest. 28 September was selected as it is thought to be the birthdate of Confucius.[19]

Taiwan	28 September	Taiwan uses this day to honor teachers' contributions to their own students and to society in general. In 1939, the Ministry of Education established the national holiday as 27 August, the attributed birthday of Confucius In 1952, the Executive Yuan changed it to September, stating that it was calculated to be the precise date in the Gregorian calendar. The festival celebration occurs in the temples of Confucius around the island, known as the "Grand Ceremony Dedicated to Confucius" (祭孔大典). The ceremony begins at 6am with drum beats. 54 musicians are dressed in robes with blue belts, and 36 (or 64) dancers dressed in yellow with green belts. They are led by Confucius's chief descendant (currently Kung Tsui-chang) and followed by ceremonial officers. Three animals are sacrificed: a cow, a goat, and a pig. The hairs plucked from these sacrificed animals are called the Hairs of Wisdom. In addition, local education institutes and civil offices award certain teachers for their excellence and positive influence.[citation needed]
Thailand	16 January	Adopted as Teachers' Day by a resolution of the government on 21 November 1956. The NEA and its affiliates continued to observe Teacher Day on the first Tuesday in March until 1985, when the National PTA established Teacher Appreciation Week in the first full week of May. Uzbekistan	1 October	Uzbekistan is one of the countries where Teachers' Day is on October 1, and there is a day off throughout the country. Teachers' Day has been celebrated here since 1997.
Vietnam	20 November	This holiday allows students to express their respect to their teacher. Students begin preparing a week in advance. Many classes prepare literature and art to welcome Teachers' Day, while other students prepare foods and flowers for the parties held at their schools. Students usually visit their teachers at their homes to offer flowers and small gifts, or organize trips with their teachers and classmates. Former students also pay respect to their former teachers on this day. The holiday has its origins in a meeting between educators in communist bloc nations in Warsaw in 1957. It was first celebrated in 1958 as the Day of the International Manifest of Educators; in 1982 the day was renamed Vietnamese Educators' Day.[citation needed]
